| “ | I saved a lot of lives that night. Lives that were never meant to be saved. They closed the restaurant after that. Said it needed additional renovations, but it never reopened. Eventually, they tore it down. (...) But Death doesn't like it when you fuck with his plans. | ” |
–Iris Campbell on the aftermath of the opening night of The Sky View. | ||
The Sky View Tower was a 494ft tall[1] skyscraper with its restaurant, The Sky View, that opened and closed on Thursday, May 16th,[2]1969.[3] Although extremely ritzy and coveted, the tower saw a rushed construction, opening five months ahead of schedule with poor operational standards and abysmal structural quality.
Though these flaws could've led to a total collapse and the deaths of all guests during its opening day, such a disaster was entirely prevented by Iris Campbell warning patrons of the impending danger. The tower was closed for inspection and renovations, but never reopened before being demolished.
Theatrically, The Sky View collapse is the sixth major disaster in the series, as seen in Final Destination Bloodlines, and the second disaster chronologically, given the Mornington Crescent.

The Sky View Restaurant and Viewing Deck
The Sky View is the chosen venue for Paul Campbell to bring his girlfriend, Iris, on a date, all with the intention of proposing to her. Throughout the night, Iris begins to spot signs of the tower's poor construction and operating standards. A bartender opens a bottle, launching the cork into a chandelier above and breaking one of the glass shards, which drops with enough force to crack the reinforced glass dance floor beneath the guests. The crack slowly spreads as Iris is taken to the viewing deck for Paul to make his proposal. While up there, the high winds blow Daphne Wo's hat from her head, while Alfred Milano continuously throws coins off the side.
Premonition
After being warned to stop by a guard, Alfred throws another penny off the balcony just as a strong gust catches it and blows it into an air vent. The penny then gets stuck in the blades of a fan, which eventually breaks, launching one of the fan's blades into a gas pipe, puncturing it. Flammable gas then slowly builds up and makes its way through the ventilation system.
Iris and Paul kiss after Iris accepts his marriage proposal.
After accepting Paul's proposal and revealing her pregnancy to him, Iris returns to the dance floor to celebrate their engagement with the live band. As people keep dancing, the glass floor begins to crack while the rivets holding the tower's supporting beams together begin to pop off from the weight. As the music reaches a crescendo, the floor suddenly shatters completely, sending those on it plummeting to the ground below. The falling dancers cause one of the tower's support beams to break while Paul is left clinging to the sharp fragments of glass left behind. Despite Iris' attempts to reach him, he loses his grip and hits his head on the broken support, falling to his death.
A gas leak causes a massive explosion.
Iris amidst the fiery chaos, looking for a way out.
The accident causes a mass panic as the guests try to evacuate. Amidst the chaos, Beatrice Fuller runs into a chef carrying a still-flaming pan, causing her to get set on fire. She then runs into the accumulated gas that has been leaking through the vents, creating a large fireball that incinerates many guests, including JB's mother, Evie. As one half of the restaurant burns, Chet persuades survivors to evacuate through the stairs, but the stairwell suddenly crumbles and causes more people to fall out of the building, except for Alfred, who escapes. Chet then tries to get people to escape using the elevator, but it is quickly overloaded with people. The mechanism snaps from the weight and sends the elevator falling, killing everyone inside upon crashing to the ground, crushing the maitre d' between the doors and bisecting him vertically in the process. This leaves the remaining people trapped on the restaurant level.
The Sky View tilts downward.
With the structural integrity compromised, a large portion of the restaurant begins tilting downward, causing everyone except Iris to slide into the outer glass windows. The penny that caused the gas leak lands on the band's grand piano, which is balancing precariously on broken floorboards. The extra weight added by the penny causes the piano to begin sliding towards the guests, crushing Daphne and causing the windows to shatter and send the others plummeting to their deaths. Alfred, who has just reached the ground, is crushed by the falling piano.
Iris and JB fall to their deaths
The tilted section of the tower collapses, leaving Iris alone on the remaining half of the restaurant. She notices JB and moves to save him as the other half of the restaurant begins to tip over from the fire. Iris manages to save JB and escape the collapse, but only catches herself by her engagement ring, caught between two pieces of rebar. This eventually degloves her finger, and she and JB fall to the debris-laden ground, with Iris being impaled in the mouth by a large piece of metal.
Reality
Iris tells the people to get off the dance floor.
Iris awakens from her vision just before Paul proposes to her and begins to notice the same events recurring, such as Daphne's hat, Alfred's coin throwing, and Chuck starts singing “Shout”. She immediately starts to panic, taking Alfred's penny and descending into the restaurant below to prevent what she just saw. She covers the chef's burning pan and rushes onto the stage, taking the microphone from Chuck. Iris pleads with the patrons to get off the dance floor, alerting the dancers to the cracks in the glass dance floor at their feet and preventing it from breaking. As a result of Iris' actions, the Sky View disaster is completely averted, saving all of the partygoers.
Aftermath
Original news article on the Sky View Tower Closed For Repairs
The tower was later closed for inspection and renovations by engineers and government officials, but it was never reopened. A news article depicting the closing event is published later, and it is briefly shown during the end credits of the movie. According to the article, a whistleblower discovered "numerous" shortcuts and building code violations taken in the design and construction of The Sky View after the opening day. As a result, the tower was eventually demolished.
Signs/Clues
- The song "Bad Moon Rising" by Creedence Clearwater Revival plays in the car as Iris and Paul drive to the tower.
- A radio is tuned to "Ring of Fire" by Johnny Cash as Iris and Paul arrive, foreshadowing the eventual fire in the circular tower.
- When Iris and Paul pull up to the venue in the opening scene, their car license plate reads "FL8•18E". Pronouncing the characters comes out as "Fl-Eight One-Eight-E", which sounds very similar to Flight 180.
- When Alfred takes his pennies from the fountain in front of the tower's entrance, a security guard tells him that taking them "brings bad luck".
- Alfred is later seen stomping on the glass elevator's floor as it ascends the tower.
- On the observation deck, a security guard warns him against throwing pennies off the tower's balcony because he "could kill someone."
- When Iris and Paul get their photograph taken, the graphic of the tower has sparkles that resemble explosions.
- The elevator's doors get stuck as they engage. Chet dismisses it as the norm while ignoring the elevator's capacity to hold a maximum of 8 people at a time. The elevator and its doors also seem to shake loosely when it goes up, and it stops.
- The maximum capacity of the elevator is 1,300 pounds. 13 is known as an unlucky number.
- When Chet is explaining the materials used to build the tower, glass is mentioned last and unstressed, as if it were an afterthought.
- At the entrance to the restaurant itself, the maître d' mentions that the tower is over capacity for opening night.
- When Paul pleads to him, after whispering about his planned proposal to Iris, the maître d' says, "You're tearing me apart," alluding to the tower's collapse as well as how he would have died.
- When Iris and Paul are looking at the window to the landscape below, the wind can be heard blowing outside the building, sounding like a screeching high-pitched scream.
- When Iris is getting overwhelmed, a few clues can be seen, including:
- A chef cooking food in a flambé for most of the night, foreshadowing the eventual fire in the tower.
- A customer cracking the caramel layer of a Crème brûlée, foreshadowing the glass dance floor breaking.
- The elevator chimes as the down button lights up, foreshadowing the falling/the tower going down.
- A chef cutting a piece of cooked meat, resembling mutilation, and flesh being cut.
- A bartender pours wine into a cocktail, resembling blood.
- The coloration of the lights inside the tower is warm (red, orange, and yellow), alluding to the fire.
- Paul remarks that his failure to secure a table is turning the night into "such a disaster."
- Iris pricks her finger on a red rose given to Paul as a boutonniere. She assures Paul that she "will live." The flower was the military symbol of the Lancashire county and would die during the War of the Roses, evoking the concept of Death's plan for the tower survivors and their bloodlines.
- Evie can be heard singing Connie Francis' song "Fallin'", with the lyrics saying "And then my ivory tower toppled; and I tumbled from the sky" whilst pointing down.
- Evie tells Iris that if Paul loves her, then he won't "let go", foreshadowing Paul losing his grip and falling from The Sky View.
- After having a conversation with Iris, Evie turns to her son, saying, "Okay, it's almost over," alluding to the disaster about to occur.
- While on the roof of the tower with Paul, Iris sees Daphne lose her hat to the wind.
- When putting the ring on Iris' finger, it doesn't fit properly, alluding to her later finger degloving.
- Chuck is singing "Shout" by the Isley Brothers, moments before the glass dance floor shatters under the customers.
- The song "Raindrops Keep Fallin' On My Head" by Bobbie Gentry is playing on the radio as people from the tower hit the ground.
- Directly before Paul falls, a shard of glass hits the beam below him, directly where his head will make an impact.
- The penny lands on the piano facing heads up, which is usually a sign of luck.
- In Final Destination 3, one of the photos Wendy shows to Kevin at the cemetery (where Ashley, Ashlyn, and Jason were buried) was a picture of Abraham Lincoln with the line error that predicted Lincoln's Assassination. USD pennies feature Abraham Lincoln in general, including the 1968 penny that would have caused The Sky View disaster and the Train 0513 derailment.

Trivia
- The Sky View disaster is the second incident (chronologically first) in the franchise that didn't actually occur outside of the premonition. The first being the Tagert Theatres 13 disaster, where Nick O'Bannon prevented the explosions. Due to Iris's actions, she is able to prevent every single possible trigger that would lead to it and save hundreds of lives in the process.
- The Sky View is the second-earliest known disaster to occur in the entire franchise (in 1969), taking place after the Mornington Crescent explosion from Final Destination: Destination Zero (2005), which took place in 1888, nearly 80 years before the Sky View collapse.
- However, it is the earliest known disaster to occur in the films, taking the spot from the North Bay Bridge collapse from Final Destination 5 (2011), which takes place in 1999, three decades later (30 years after the Sky View).
- This is the second (chronologically first) disaster to have been never mentioned again during the franchise, the other being the North Bay Bridge. In this instance, the reason being that it never happened, and the tower being renovated and eventually demolished, with no one believing Iris's claims that she saw what would've happened.
- The Sky View incident is the second time a disaster has occurred at a tower throughout the franchise, with the first being the Merlin's Tower accident from Final Destination: Dead Man's Hand (2005).
- An element of Iris' premonition references another disaster in the franchise: the pricked finger as a warning sign of Death. Sam Lawton pricks his finger shortly before the North Bay Bridge disaster and while on board Volée Airlines Flight 180. The same thing happens to Isaac Palmer, who pricks his finger before his death at the Ming Yun Spa.
- At the very end of the film, Stefani Reyes pricks her finger in the same way as Iris did, coinciding with her realization that she is not safe from Death.
- A possible inspiration for the Sky View disaster could be the Ostankino Tower fire, which occurred in Moscow in 2000.
- Fire broke out in the restaurant tower, which had a floor made out of glass, and major casualties were prevented as well. Three people died in the Ostankino Tower: two firefighters and the elevator operator, who all died in an elevator crash like Chet, Mr. Fuller, and multiple unnamed guests in the premonition.
- The Sky View itself and its disaster may possibly inspired from the Convention Center tower from the 2010 destruction racing video game Split/Second. (The Convention Center tower can be destroyed in the track Downtown Central)
- The spelling of "Sky View" is inconsistent in the film, as it's referred to as "Skyview", such as at the photograph spot at the tower[5], and sometimes referred to as "Sky View", such as on flags outside of the Sky View.[6] The newspaper clipping at the very end of the film interchangeably uses both spellings.[7]
- Also, the article is dated 1968, even though the prologue is set in 1969. It was probably a printing error or a mistake made by the film editors.
- In a popular fan theory, it is theorized that all the visionaries are direct descendants of someone who was meant to die in The Sky View and only have the visions/are meant to die as a part of Death taking each bloodline that was not meant to exist.
- This is not canon and has been debunked by directors Adam Stein & Zach Lipovsky.
- The concept had indeed previously been considered through discussions by Stein and Lipovsky, though they ultimately did not go through with it for the final film due to several parents of visionaries (such as the Brownings and the Christensens) not dying prior to their children.
- Additionally, there would be two more canon breaks if this were actually implemented:
- Iris only isolated herself in her cabin because The Sky View list had eventually caught up to her after Death cleared all previous survivors and their descendants. Her isolation likely began sometime between 2001 at the earliest and 2004 at the latest, aligning with her claim to Stefani in 2024 that she had been isolated for around twenty years. By that point afterward, it would have been impossible for there to be any more descendants left to be marked to die too, Wendy and Nick included in 2005 and 2009, if the list itself was already supposed to have been almost entirely cleared out beforehand, with only Iris herself holding it back from continuing onward.
- If everyone were placed together on the same single list, then Kimberly Corman's revival through new life, confirmed by William Bludworth, would've already broken the chain back in 2000 and permanently saved all the people marked to die after her, including Wendy, Nick, Iris and her family members, and Bludworth himself.
- Additionally, there would be two more canon breaks if this were actually implemented:
- The concept had indeed previously been considered through discussions by Stein and Lipovsky, though they ultimately did not go through with it for the final film due to several parents of visionaries (such as the Brownings and the Christensens) not dying prior to their children.

- The Sky View Tower’s construction began in mid-1967 [8].
- NOTICE: The following information is merely a hypothesis. The original concept for Iris’s restaurant vision is believed to have been set in 1959, a different year from the one used in the final version. This theory is based on leaks and early videos announcing an initial stage of Final Destination Bloodlines, which appeared long before the film entered full production. The hypothesis was proposed when the production company confirmed the new installment rather than when production officially began. Additionally, songs such as “Fallin’” and “Shout,” both released in the late 1950s, can be heard in the background. By 1969, it would have been less typical to hear music of that style, particularly rock and roll tracks like “Fallin’,” alongside the style of dancing performed by the characters. The dances observed, especially when Iris crosses the dance floor, are characteristic of the 1950s, which would have appeared unusual, though not entirely impossible, in the late 1960s.

- ↑ During the 1960s, newspapers typically operated on fixed print deadlines, so a major incident like the Sky View Tower grand opening being cut short at sunset on May 16 would most realistically be reported in the following day’s morning edition, dated May 17. This would allow reporters time overnight to verify facts, gather official statements, and write a complete account, all of which are reflected in the article shown during the credits. While some cities still ran late evening editions that could include same-day coverage, such reports were often brief and incomplete. As a result, May 17 stands as the most historically accurate newspaper reference point, with May 16 remaining the actual date on which the disaster was prevented.
- ↑ "Bad Moon Rising", a song released in 1969, is playing during the opening of Final Destination: Bloodlines. This clearly sets the opening scene of the movie in 1969. Additionally, both directors Adam Stein and Zach Lipovsky, as well as actress Brec Bassinger, have referred to the opening scene as the “1969 premonition.” In that case, it still remains unclear why the article detailing the tower’s closure for repairs is dated 1968.

Stefani Reyes also states "Hundreds of people were supposed to die that night but Iris stopped the disaster" when telling her family that Death was coming for them.

- ↑ It is stated in the newspaper covering the tower’s closure that construction took over two years and Chet mentions the entire project was finished five months ahead of schedule. If the original intended completion date was around October 1969, counting back two years suggests work likely began around May or June 1967, continued through 1968 and then reached its final, although rushed stage in mid 1969, right around the corner from the opening day on May 16. Because the project was suddenly set to accelerate completion much earlier than expected for unknown reasons, the final months leading to October, usually reserved for structural reinforcement, safety checks and proper finishing work, were greatly shortened, which explains why the tower appeared unstable and collapsed so easily during Iris’s premonition.
